LPG Shock: Shortage and Rising Prices Fuel Historic Demand for Induction Cookstoves

A significant crisis is brewing in India’s kitchen fuel market. Global disruptions, particularly the conflict in West Asia affecting the Strait of Hormuz, have hit India’s LPG and natural gas supply chains. This disruption is causing acute LPG shortages and volatility.

The resulting consumer anxiety has triggered a sharp surge in national demand for electric cooking solutions. Consequently, induction cookstove prices in the open market have skyrocketed in recent weeks.

Government Action: EESL to Procure 5 Lakh Induction Cookstoves

Responding to this national demand and to stabilize the escalating prices, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, is scaling up operations.

Building on an existing tender for one lakh units, EESL is now set to float fresh tenders to procure over five lakh induction cookstoves in two phases. This major move aims to ensure widespread availability of affordable electric cooking solutions across both urban and rural towns.

Policy Boost: Driving the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP)

This aggressive procurement strategy directly supports the government’s National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), a key component of the broader Go Electric Campaign. The NECP aims to drastically reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels like LPG by promoting sustainable, electric alternatives.

The 5 lakh induction cookstoves to be procured by EESL will be 1200-W energy-efficient models. These stoves are expected to be equipped with advanced features, including child safety locks and energy consumption displays, and will be made available through EESL’s e-commerce platform, EESLmart.

What This Means for Consumers

For consumers, this government intervention is designed to achieve two main goals. First, the massive procurement of 5 lakh induction cookstoves will inject critical supply into the market, directly combating the recent artificial price hikes and ensuring price stabilization.

Second, as LPG availability remains volatile due to geopolitical factors, switching to induction cooking offers households a reliable and increasingly cost-effective alternative. It reduces vulnerability to international energy supply chain disruptions and volatile cylinder prices.
